Asparagus belongs to the lily family and can easily grow in your home garden. This plant, when stocked in grocery stores, is a signal on the start of spring. There are many benefits of having asparagus as part of your diet. It has been known for its detoxification properties, anti-aging components and as an aphrodisiac vegetable. It is also a perfect source of fiber and proteins that assist the digestive and immune systems of the body. Here are some health benefits of Asparagus:

Asparagus boosts the body’s immune system
Compounds such as vitamin K which are prevalent in Asparagus help in boosting the body’s immunity. Vitamin K is also famous for improving blood clotting mechanism of the body and for strengthening of bones. Compounds found in asparagus also protect the body from diseases such as diabetes and protect the heart from cardiovascular related complications.

Asparagus protects against cancer
When you have a diet inclusive of asparagus, you are protecting yourself against some forms of cancer. It has high folate content that checks against cancerous growths. It also has a compound known as inullin that is often digested in large intestines and assists in better absorption of nutrients thereby lowering risks of getting colon cancer.

Asparagus acts as an effective anti-aging agent
Because this food is rich in potassium, vitamin A and folate, it has high glutathione which is an amino acid compound with antioxidant properties. For this reason, asparagus intake can successfully prevent aging because glutathione protect cells from free radicals ensuring that they live longer. Glutathione also protects the skin from pre-mature wrinkling and from any damage that can be done by the sun.

Prevents birth defects
Are you pregnant? Intake of asparagus may prevent you from bearing a baby with birth related defects. Asparagus has plenty of folate, a folic acid supplement recommended by doctors for proper growth of the fetus. Folate regulates embryonic cell formations and as a result, successfully prevents premature birth of babies.

Helps in the treatment of urinary tract diseases
Research has previously indicated that those suffering from urinary tract infections can be treated through asparagus diets. The diet can also prevent other types of diseases like kidney stones due potassium, vitamin A and folate components found in this plant food.

Benefits related to asparagus as medicine can never be fully exhausted. It has many more medicinal values than the ones highlighted above. There are many more health reasons why you should always include asparagus in your meals plans.
