Ayurvedic Ritucharya- Planning for Fall & Winter: Food and Eating
As we see the changing foliage colors and falling leaves, it reminds us even more so, that we are towards the end of fall into the winter weather. It is important we plan well so we can continue with our healthy lifestyle habits right thru fall and  cold winter into the mild spring (when life seems to be flourishing again!).

Ayurveda provides clear ideas and guidelines on how to best plan and manage such change in seasons. It is called Ritucharya.
In this slide, we will look at how we can follow Ayurvedic guidelines to maintain our health and vitality
as we transition from summer into  the colder weather.

What is “Organic Farming”?- understanding the many benefits and importance of organic farming

10/7/2020

Organic farming is a method of farming that implements techniques that are not harmful to the environment or to those working on the farm. It is the preferred greener approach to farming because it reduces our impact on nature and promotes natural growing methods.

Organic farming monitors the production of fruits and vegetables closely and has a number of guidelines that must be followed.
The use of chemicals, such as in fertilizers and pesticides, is monitored and restricted to a certain amounts, while natural fertilizers and resources are meant to be used instead.

Organic farming prohibits using GMO. It also encourages livestock to be kept in humane conditions that allow exposure to the outdoors and giving them healthy feed. Animals and plants that are used in organic farming should be selected by their ability to adapt to the local environment and their natural ability to combat diseases.

In order to maintain and promote healthy soil, organic farming uses methods such as crop rotation, mulching, compost and recycling of various wastes such as crops and manure from animals. Instead of using heavy chemicals as pesticides and fertilizers, organic farming aims to keep weeds and pests at bay by using strong crops that are naturally resistant, selecting the best crops, rotating crops, cultivating in the best manner and using pesticides from a natural source instead.
Picture
A common misconception with organic farming is that farmers allow their crops to grow freely without much moderation.

However, organic farming is actually a very complex procedure that requires a lot of skill and technique. It is a combination of traditional techniques and modern understanding in order to yield the best results. Organic farmers know that not every predator in their farm is detrimental, not every weed must be removed and that chemicals are the last resort to dealing with a problem.

Farming does not have to be completely weed and pest free, because that simply shows that they do not want to live in that environment either. Therefore, why should we think it is okay to consume? Organic farming encourages farmers to be aware of the types of weeds and pests, moderate them and use them in beneficial ways when applicable.
Picture
The benefits of organic farming are better for our planet than large scale farming because it does not harm the soil, regulates weeds and pests without causing damage to nature, does not contaminate water, encourages the use of natural resources and gives us nutritious end results.

How to save on energy costs- Tips on Green Living

6/26/2020

One of the easiest ways to save on lighting is to use lights that save energy.

Most homes use regular light bulbs and spotlights that are halogen. The option for using less energy would be to replace these lights with either LEDs or compact fluorescents.

Compact fluorescents are typically thought of as “energy-saving” light bulbs and are available practically anywhere. You can purchase compact fluorescent bulbs that have the exact brightness as a typical light bulb and save several dollars annually, which adds up significantly during the lifetime of a bulb.
Picture
LEDs are better than using halogen lights. Even though they cost more than compact fluorescent bulbs they end up saving us more throughout the years.

Accent lights for outdoor use can be solar powered and floodlights for the garden can be energy saving as well.

Many people tend to leave the light on if they plan on returning to an area or a room in the near future. However, it can save energy by turning off lights whenever you do not require them.

Finding ways to reduce your lighting cost not only cuts back on the money you spend on your home but the energy you save as well.

Today is World Environment Day... when we look at the deforestation statistics, it is just plain appalling!!

It seems 4500 acres of forests are cleared every hour by forest fires, bull dozers, machetes etc. as per the information provided by www.conserve-energy-future.com/various-deforestation-facts.php  The total world forest loss till date is 7.3 million hectares per year.

I hope, today we all can make a stand that we will support nature- in our own little or big way.

By embracing Green Living, we are not only choosing better health and lifestyle for ourselves, we also ensure that we are living in-sync with nature.

What better way to honor and celebrate the world environment day... Happy World Environment Day everyone!!

Birds are singing again in the cities!!

Birds singing to celebrate the joy of lower pollution levels and a cleaner air quality in our towns and cities…

Typically, the pollution in our towns and cities, tends to drive away all the birds. But with the recent slowing down of daily commute and other pollution-reducing factors, we find that nature is coming back into balance.

Several environmental groups have already indicated how pollution levels and air quality in most places have drastically improved and it seems like the local birds are enjoying this ability to able to breathe freely- and singing their joy about it!

Today, I woke up to the birds singing and somewhere they seemed to remind me to take the time and reflect on how I would proceed with my daily life and lifestyle habits and things start getting back to ‘normal’. What steps would I take to ensure that I do my part to reduce carbon emissions and my environmental footprint.
Yes, it is true- as an individual, my choice will not create global impact. But, in a way- it will. After all, what we call our community, our city, our country is ultimately many ‘individuals’.

If more people make this decision to modify their daily habits to be in-sync with nature and in accordance with a sustainable way of living, it will help to maintain the reduce pollution levels that we now have.

As always, it is our choice… this is our earth… let us make it a decision to live a more Greener life!!

Are GMO Foods very detrimental to our health and wellness?

12/22/2019

Are GMO Foods very detrimental to our health and wellness? - something to think about as we approach holiday times and a new year.

Holidays are mostly spent with friends and family, sharing food and gifts and getting ourselves ready for a new year. It is important not just for our own wellbeing, but also for that of our planet, that we take some time out this holiday season to reflect on our food choices and their impact on our bodies (our physical health) and the wellbeing of our planet (sustainable life on earth).
Picture

What are GMO foods and how are they detrimental to our health?

Genetically modified (GMO) foods can be found in practically all supermarkets these days. Over 85% of the United States corn and soy crops are said to be GMO foods, while up to 70% of processed items available in U.S supermarkets contain ingredients that are genetically modified.

What GMO foods mean are basically altered genetic DNA that is not naturally occurring in nature. These foods come from various organisms and are combined in various methods such as introducing a new gene to an organism.
We call it GMO when the genetic make up of an organism is altered in anyway. Some of the most common GMO foods aside from corn and soy include cotton and maize.

These ingredients come in many snacks, breakfast options, baby foods and others.
Picture
There are two different opinions when it comes to GMO foods. The U.S government states that GMO foods tend to be safer and can be helpful to those who are starving, whereas the EU prefers to keep their food natural and organic. The EU believes that GMO foods are detrimental to local farming and the risks are too great to ignore.

The various risks associated with GMO foods include resistance to antibiotics, contamination, toxins in foods, altering nutritional content and possible affects on the environment.

Since GMO foods are still in the early stages it is hard to tell what the consequences of these foods will have on our health. These foods have the possibility of creating entirely new types of bacteria that can severely affect our body.
Picture
It is known that diverse genes are more healthy and strong, therefore those that are altered can have less capability of handling drought, handling fungus and bacteria as a natural option would. If we modify and reduce the diversity of genes then it could affect areas that rely on crops that are GMO.

When we put GMO foods out into the world, they will affect seeds and create traits that were not there in the first place. Even though the GMO was designed in a lab, the way that it interacts with nature will have its own effect, such as killing out essential foods or resources.

One of the pitches of the US government that advocates that use of GMO foods states that it is better for the future of global food supply.

However, since the introduction of GMO there has been no particular leap in yield boost or reduction of the use of pesticides. GMOs need a large amount of chemicals such as herbicides, fungicides and pesticides, which will affect our water and food supply. - something to think about and research further into...

Consuming responsibly- this is a REAL need...

7/29/2019

Yes, it is true that we need resources to develop our self, our business and also our nation. But- at what cost??

Every farmer knows that they cannot harvest a good crop, unless they have first tended to soil and made sure that a bountiful crop will grow. We need to take not only a more responsible approach to how we extract and utilize the resources we obtain from earth, but we also need to focus on how we can make it stretch the max.

We think of stretching our dollars for maximum buying power. It is high time we take that approach with our natural resources!! It seems as of today; we have consumed more of earth’s natural resources than it will be able to replenish- i.e. our rate of consumption far exceeds earth’s rate of regeneration for the year.

Check out this article: As of today, humans have used more resources than Planet Earth can regenerate in a year
Picture
Many a times we read interesting articles or watch an impactful video and say to our self- “How terrible!! But since I am not a policy maker or a corporate CEO, there is not much I can do…” Looking after our planet is everyone’s responsibility and there are always small things that each one of us can do to help towards the bigger “saving the planet” program.

For starters, make it a point to save water. Just one simple step- can you switch off the water while you are brushing your teeth or while you shampoo your hair. It may seem like a simple step, but such simple steps go a long way to make meaningful change in our society, in our policies and in our environment at large.

Also, repairing leaky taps helps to not only save water (an important natural resource) but also can save you lots of money and to help further, enhance the energies in your home from a Feng Shui or Vaastu perspective.

Whenever we open any new box of factory packing of electronics, shoes, handbags and so many other items- it is common to find little packets of silica gel! They are included so that they can absorb any moisture inside the packaging and thus preserve the quality of the product. Silica is a desiccant and it helps by absorbing and holding water vapor.

These packets clearly say- “Throw Away…DO NOT EAT” and of course silica is not an edible material. So, how can we find helpful ways to reuse these little packets??

Hopefully this video will give you some quick and easy ways to reuse and repurpose these Silica desiccant packets…

Watch: Why you should never throw these little packets away

Five Healthy Habits for Vision Health

10/14/2018

Many of us rely on healthy vision and take it for granted on a day-to-day basis. Unfortunately, eyesight tends to worsen or improve little by little.

There are things we can do to improve our eyesight and to keep vision healthy. The following tips will help you maintain healthy vision.

Sleep is very important in order to let our eyes get the adequate amount of rest. It is recommended for individuals to sleep a minimum of six hours, with the optimal sleeping period being a full 8 hours.

Getting enough sleep also helps reduce dark under eye circles that many tend to struggle with.

Picture
Consuming the right types of food, that deliver the proper nutrients to your body, is essential for maintaining healthy eyesight. Eyes rely on cell repair and the best way to repair cells is to provide it with appropriate nutrition, minerals and vitamins.

Healthy options for eyesight improvement include lots of vegetables, fruits, carrots and calcium. The best minerals for your eyes include vitamins A, B, C and E, as well as magnesium and zinc.

Deficiencies in vitamin A tend to be the main cause of eyesight problems such as night blindness and conjunctival xerosis.
Picture
Taking breaks from staring at either computers or mobile phones is necessary to allow your eyes to recover. Focused attention on screens tends to strain the eyes. A good habit to rest your eyes is to look at something else every twenty minutes. You could also shut your lids for a short time.

Long car journeys are often accompanied by reading. Reading in moving vehicles is stressful on the eyes and can even hurt them.

Try to refrain from reading in buses or cars. If you do need to read, keep blinking and do not let your eyes get dry. Keeping eyes moist is important to maintaining their health. Keeping eyes moist also applies to using computers or anything that can be straining on the eyes.

Be aware of your habits when reading. Many people enjoy lying down in bed and reading before sleep. While this is a great habit, try to sit up with back support as opposed to lying down. As a bonus, it helps to develop good posture and back muscles.

Reading or looking at screens in the dark does not do any good to the eyes. Make sure you have a good light source.
