Shiatsu (Japanese 指圧) - is a massage technique from Japan. It follows similar principles to western massage, i.e. using principles of body’s anatomy and physiology. Thumbs, palms, and fingers are used to apply pressure to specific areas of the recipient’s body. Shiatsu relies on comprehensive understanding body’s functions thru general principles of anatomy and physiology instead of on concepts of energy flow, elements etc.

The following three points are the major premise of any shiatsu therapy:
One should use bare hands for carrying out the massage.
One can only press on the recipient’s body surface, i.e. rubbing or kneading which are otherwise standard massage techniques are not permitted in Shiatsu.

One carries out this technique to maintain body’s intrinsic balance and well-being.
