Acupressure: an ancient science of healing from the far east

Acupressure is a method of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that has roots from thousands of years ago. There are mentions and detailed usages of Acupressure in Ayurveda, which has an even more ancient history. It involves the use of fingers to apply pressure on precise parts of the body and is said to be even better at stimulating body parts than Acupuncture (which uses needles).

Acupressure in Traditional Chinese Medicine is based on the theory of five elements and various energy meridians/ channels within our body.
Picture
TCM sees our body as a complete system that is completely connected. Chi is a type of force that is believed to connect and flow through our entire body through routes that are called “meridians”.

We have twelve main meridians in our body and they are named after the organ that they are linked with. The meridians include the lung, spleen, heart, stomach, large intestine, small intestine, kidney, bladder, liver, triple warmer, gallbladder and pericardium meridian.

The two important things to understand about chi are that they are made up of Yin and Yang.
These energies are said to work in correlation but are entirely opposing forces. It is said that yin and yang are working in the best balance when the body is performing at its optimal level. However, when the body is corrupt, they are considered to be unstable and are the reason the body reacts in illnesses or other symptoms. Acupressure is believed to fix the body’s yin and yang imbalance.

Since in acupressure, we apply pressure to specific energy points on our body, it can easily be used as a simple self-healing technique.

Since acupressure involved applied pressure by using the hands, it is often used as a method to treat oneself as well. The benefits of receiving acupressure include relief of stress, relaxation in the body and mind, improved circulation of the blood, stimulating the body’s response to removing toxins, improved levels of energy, reduced pains during labor, alleviation of aches in the head, shoulder or neck, encouraging healing in the body (such as with injuries) and a great feeling within one’s body.

The key benefit of receiving acupressure treatment is: stress-relief and a feeling of joyful relaxation and well-being.

Acupressure also helps with improving circulation, elevating energy levels within our body, reducing aches and pains along with encouraging health and healing, by vitalizing body's intrinsic healing abilities.
Picture
The reason acupressure works is because the stress of the fingers at the specific points encourages the body to work better at helping these points recover, such as by encouraging blood circulation and relieving tension in the muscle. Acupressure can be used when one already has a problem but it is great method for prevention as well. Just to get an idea of how in sync our body is to our vital organs, imagine that there are at least 800 points that run through the meridians that play a role in effecting the organ it is related to.

Acupressure can be a great preventative and healing technique, particularly to help balance our body and address chronic issues and problems.

Even though it is a method of TCM, many of those in western medicine have been trying to see how it translates to modern medicine and have found that it can encourage endorphins in the body.

Thai Massage

Thai massage is one of the most popular forms of massages due to its unique attributes. It is similar to a yoga session in that you are twisted into positions, however during these movements the therapist applies pressure on various points. It is common to have a Thai massage on the floor and to wear loose fitting clothes (that are often provided).

A typical Thai massage lasts for one or two hours. People are often scared when they first hear of Thai massage because of the painful experiences associated with it. However, like any massage, Thai masseuses are able to perform all levels of pressure and all you have to do is ask them to decrease or increase the pressure depending on your comfort level.

The poses used during Thai massage are based on balancing the body’s chi, which is said to stimulate healing within the body. While Swedish and western massages are typically performed both face down and lying on your back, Thai massage has a variety of poses that stimulate circulation. This is excellent for encouraging from lymphatic system and promoting proper heart and digestive functions. Positions involved in Thai massage include lying on the back, sides, face down and seated.

Even though you are being twisted around at times, Thai massage is quite a relaxing experience that often causes people to fall asleep. Thai massage is also great for getting rid of painful knots or aches because it works on related areas as well. The benefits of Thai massage include better flexibility and overall well-being. It is excellent for professionals who have to sit in a position, such as at a desk, for a long time or other positions that can cause strain to the body.

Thai massage techniques originally stem from India and therefore incorporate the elements such as fire, wind, earth and water. When the body is out of balance, it is said that the elements are not harmonized. Thai massage helps to rebalance the body by applying pressure on various acupressure spots. One of the enjoyable techniques of Thai massage is when they hold a point in order to block the blood flow for about half a minute. There is a wonderful feeling of heat once the point is released and blood flow continues, plus it is beneficial for stimulating our circulation.

Make sure to check with a doctor if you have any concerns before a Thai massage session.

Tai Chi is an exercise used to calm the mind and strengthen he body. It is known for having many good benefits for our health and mind. Tai chi is a flowing type of movement and has been found to help with various ailments, as well as lower levels of stress. Many refer to tai chi as a form of moving meditation due to its fluid and calming nature.

It started out in ancient China and is executed by using slow, controlled movements that merge from pose to pose. The idea is to have the body in a constant state of motion, albeit at a gradual pace. Tai chi is considered a form of exercise as well as a great stretching technique. There are several styles of tai chi, which vary in styles and philosophies. Some types of tai chi are more specifically used for martial arts development while others can be for general wellbeing.

Because tai chi is made up of soft and flowing movements, it is considered an exercise with very little impact and therefore does not put much stress on areas such as the joints and muscles. This is excellent for people of all ages with varying levels of fitness since it can be performed by practically anyone. Many older people enjoy taking up tai chi because it provides a soft exercise yet keeps the body active and healthy.

People that are limited to other kinds of exercises can generally participate in tai chi. However, it is best to check with your doctor just to make sure. The reason tai chi is so popular is that it shows results in improving general health. It is known to reduce levels of anxiety and stress and improve stamina, balance, flexibility, as well as give muscles more strength.

Those who perform tai chi on a regular basis tend to have better sleep, a stronger immune system, reduced pain of joints and reduced levels of blood pressure and cholesterol. Those who are interested in tai chi can find an instructor, who is qualified to teach, in order to receive the most benefits and avoid performing techniques in a harmful or uncomfortable manner.

Important aspects of tai chi include practicing the positions in their correct form and learning how to manage your breathing. While it is possible to learn these techniques with a DVD or book, it is much easier to join a class instead of monitoring yourself at the start and also avoids unnecessary injuries from performing positions in the wrong way.

Unlike other types of medicinal techniques, Reiki is available for anyone to learn. All ages and areas of the world have no problem implementing Reiki techniques. Reiki is sometimes thought of as a silly belief, but many that have tried to have Reiki, without the belief it would work, found wonderful results. Reiki also encourages people to live a balanced life full of harmony and love.

During a Reiki session, the practitioner will have you sit comfortably either on a bed, massage bed, couch or chair. The only item of clothing that must be removed are shoes, though sometimes belts and ties are asked to be loosened. Comfortable, loose fabrics are best to wear to a session, with little or no accessories. The practitioner will then proceed to use his hands on various parts of the body, resting each for up to five minutes.

What are some of the Precautions Which Need to be Taken During Acupuncture?

9/20/2013

It is very rare to hear stories of any bad side effects from acupuncture. However, various conditions can call for necessary precautions and sometimes encourage a different approach.

Precautions must be taken if the patient is pregnant, since acupuncture cannot be performed on the lumbosacral or abdominal region during this time. They will also not receive treatment to areas that affect the uterus. The same goes for women who are currently experiencing menstruation.

Before an acupuncturist begins there is always a time to consult and find out what the problem is and what can be improved in the body.

Acupuncturists are told not to treat patients that are too full of food, hungry, overly tired, intoxicated and overly anxious or nervous. Patients that have weaker bodies due to complications are given a softer treatment, which involves more gentle needlework and application.

If you have a history of blood coagulation, random bleeding or hemorrhages then the acupuncturist will suggest acupressure instead of needle usage.

Acupuncture is not to be performed in parts that are infected and scarred or places that have tumors or ulcers. It is the acupuncturist’s job to know the exact angle and depth required for the needle at different spots, especially when it comes to areas of the neck, eyes, back and chest, as well as anywhere near major blood vessels or major organs.
